Directory Listing 101, Part 3: Tell the World Where You Operate and How to Get in Touch

If someone wanted to give your business money, where could they find you?
The location part of your business directory listing (or general business description) is very short but very important.
So, to get specific and realistic, sit down and think about your customers. Then, answer a few questions:
- If you have a physical location or only a small area you serve, what’s the farthest a regular customer might travel to regularly come see you?
- If you mainly work out of a shop or an office, how often do you serve customers who outside of that building? In other words, do you bring your business goods and services out into the community? If so, where are these activities typically located?
- If you do things like delivery, drop-off, or travelling sales, do you do that often? If every customer asked for it, would you still have the time and money to stay profitable?
- If you offer services online, do you need to ship things to customers? Would you be willing to ship internationally, or would that cost too much to be profitable in the long run?
- Are there any other geography-related barriers that would prevent someone from using your services or purchasing your goods? For example, is your website only in one language?
Going through questions like these can set realistic expectations for you and your customers. You can then define exactly where your business operates and who it serves, from a geographic point of view.
Exercise: Block 4 — Where You Operate
Choose one option. Be specific: vague location copy reduces trust.
✏️ Choose your option and write your location line.
| Option A — Physical location: “Located at [Address], [Neighborhood], [City], [State].” Option B — Service area: “Serving clients in [City/Region/State (if needed)].” Option C — Online / remote: “Working with clients online nationwide.” My location line:_______________________________________________________________ Paste this into: • Elevate Directory → location / service area field + end of Description • Google Business Profile → address or service area • Yelp → service area |
Exercise: Block 5 — Primary Contact Method
Choose ONE best way for a new customer to reach you.
List it first among your contact options, and keep this information identical everywhere you list or describe your business.
The other options you provide should be offered just in case a customer can’t use, doesn’t like, or doesn’t prefer the ONE best way you’ve listed. Including alternate contact information can also make your directory information feel more complete.
✏️ Fill in your contact details.
| Best contact method (circle one): Phone / Email / Website / WhatsApp My primary contact info (complete only those that apply): Phone/WhatsApp: ____________________________________________ Email: _____________________________________________________ Website: ___________________________________________________ Booking link: ______________________________________________ Paste this into: • Elevate Directory → website / email / phone fields • Google Business Profile → phone + website • Yelp → call-to-action / website • Instagram / Facebook → link in bio |
The best way to think about how easy it is to contact you and access your services is to put yourself in the customer’s shoes.
Consider this: how many times have you had a bad experience with a business because they did a poor job of explaining where they were located, where to find their services, and how to get in touch?
